REVIEW - Change by Mondegreen

Mondegreen are an indie/folk trio hailing from Widnes, Cheshire. They are another fine example of music from the area becoming more prominent in recent years, another being The Racket who they will be supporting tonight at Kash 22, Frodsham.

The band, consisting of Laura Griffiths, Claire Smith, Leanne Griffiths, cite influences from many great artists such as Idlewild, Imogen Heap, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Seth Lakeman and Kacey Musgraves to name a few. About a year ago they released their EP Change. It was released with a launch party which, I went to and ever since its had a firm place on Softlad's New and Notable playlist on Spotify.

The three-strong EP Change starts with the track Sometimes. The song's intro starts with a mellow resonating harmony giving us an insight of whats to come. As a gentle acoustic takes us through the song the thing that stands out is the three part harmony, which is flawless with the use of lower and higher range of vocals. The mix of tempos and the incorporation of a softly plucked electric gives the song an edge and diversity. A great start to the EP.

Next up Change, a song with a strong message about sticking out a relationship hoping that something will change for the better. Again, the three part harmony takes us through the song, but the inclusion of a reverb-laden, well-played electric through the chorus gives the song another level. This song is the strong point of the EP and the band are right to highlight it. The EP finishes on Unsung Hero. The song ramp up the ethical, floating feeling by adding echo to the harmonies and added sound effects. The vocals throughout feel floaty and delve in and out of being wispy and full of power. A solo vocal break towards the end gives us a glimpse of the vocal prowess of Laura Griffiths, which I hope to hear more of in future recordings.

Overall, an amazing release showcasing Mondegreen's talent to create catchy, dreamy songs full of emotion. Their harmonies set them apart from most bands out there at the moment and it is their strong point making anyone listening to them get lost in the music, which I admit have done hearing them live in the past. More solo vocals from Laura and maybe more prominent electric guitar would benefit the band as they continue their music journey in my opinion. I look forward to hearing more from the band and seeing where they take their music.
