REVIEW - Climbing La Scala by Pinstripe

Pinstripe are a three-piece indie rock band from Runcorn, Cheshire who have recently released their second release to date a four track Climbing La Scala.

The band, since forming earlier this year have been busy gigging around the North West and recording their second release to date, Climbing La Scala.

The first track from the release It's Time, from the get-go gives us chaos in the form of a heavy grunge guitar sound. The song goes on to introduce heavy drums and bass as it goes onto the song. Frontman Charlie Pinnington provides some well song blues rock sounding vocals coupled with some nice sounding harmonies. Overall, It's Time showcases the bands energy, vocal skill from Charlie and the light and shade of their music.

The Rise starts off a bit more lighthearted with lively guitar and drums taking us through the song. Charlie adds some well-written and well-sung catchy lyrics throughout the song interspaced by heavy guitar riffs and drums. Towards the end the song gives us a little different sound, sounding more light blues then the heavier sound given through most of the song. The catchy lyrics, the different guitar sounds and overall energy showcases the bands unique sound and diversity when it comes to their music.

Pinstripe crank up the grungy blues rock bass and guitar in their next track Save the Day. A faint likeness to The Black Keys can be heard here with a similar guitar riff loop and blues-heavy well sung vocals. Charlie's vocals shine in this song where he pushes the boundaries of how well and loud he can sing. Indeed, he has a perfect voice for the genre of choice, a sometimes warbly, sometimes gruff loud voice, which can belt out the well written lyrics with ease. So far this song is the high point of the release, which includes the energy of The Rise and the vocal skill and lyrics from It's Time.

The release finishes with Again. We are introduced to sexy drums and bass with a decent tempo. Charlies vocals spice things up further with some added backing vocals. Its not long before the song brings back the heavy sound to give the chorus extra umph. At the 3 minute mark they take it up a notch with blistering well-played guitar riffs over the grunge sound. The song further showcases that the band is not one to be pigeon-holed into one sound.

Climbing La Scala is a great release by Pinstripe who probably are still finding their feet and their own sound. Charlie and co have noticeably leaned heavily on styles from bands they are influenced by like The Arctic Monkeys and The Black Keys to serve them in experimenting and finding their own style of music that serves them best. What we have here is a band, not a year into their music journey, knowing what style they want and growing into it. The songs showcase their talent, energy and diversity and we can't wait to see what kind of band they will grow into as this release as got us wanting more.

Pinstripe will be playing for us this Saturday when they support Reclaim Vienna at Phase One: Liverpool. Find our more and get your tickets HERE
