REVIEW - Coda by Flamingo House

Flamingo House from Flint, Wales are building up a reputation of late of being a dark horse on the music scene, producing tonally different tracks from the rest incorporating shoegaze, indie and lo-fi rock genres to make something unique and exciting. Their latest release Coda is no exception.

Coda starts with a military style drum setting the tempo for the rest of the song. Front-woman Evie Reynolds adds her unique retro sounding vocals. Her vocals pay homage to a classic style by differing from a a style where words are lengthened out in a calm and almost lazy way like jazz singers perhaps and on the other flip-side her vocals have a sense of power as the song progresses into the chorus ensuring the song never feels same-y. I can sense an improvement in Evie's vocals and I'm certainly interested in seeing how she develops given enough time.

As the song reaches the halfway point, the tone shifts to a more grunge style with distorted guitar and more powerful vocals singing out the same lyrics, speaking of angst and frustration, but with more power, as if in a conversation where they didn't think the listener was listening so it's said with more impact. The band add to the message by adding their own signature into the mix whether it be a deftly played drum or the guitar that adds to the dreamy, other-worldly sound with reverb effects and sparse timing.

Overall, the songs a step on the evolutionary journey ladder by Flamingo House. With every song they improve, there's no doubt about it. Their skill in creating unique, dreamy but otherwise full of powerful and full of angst tunes sets them apart from the rest. This coupled with their live performance we see great things ahead for them and we can't wait to hear their future releases
