REVIEW: Somnia by Flamingo House

Flamingo House, we feel, are a wild card in the music scene at the moment, going against the norm when it comes to music style, presentation and performance.

The four-strong band hails from Flint, Wales and are what we would describe as lo-fi, shoegaze indie rock with a sound reminiscent of late 80s / early nineties indie at its peak.

They have just dropped Somnia, their second release to date following 3.16 earlier in the year. The song starts with a droning bass eerily like what you'd expect from 90s US grunge. As the song goes on front-woman Evie Reynolds adds who unique vocals, more spoken then sung, but which suits their style so much. The lyrics full of angst and defiant words repeat throughout with a low current of echoing effects. The clean played guitar and soft sounding drums further add to the style they are going for contrasting with the heavy bass and vocals.

Overall, Somnia is a great track albeit a short one. The track creates a dreamy sound you can't help get lost in. Somnia showcases the bands ability to fuse sounds together to to this complete with sampled sounds, contrasting instruments and unique vocals/lyrics. All in all, the song helps cement the bands unique style and we can't wait to hear more from them as they progress.
