Single review: Ultraviolet - The Left Backs

Introducing The Left Backs, a four-piece indie-rock band, originally hailing from Belfast, Ireland, but now call Liverpool their home from home. They brought with them to Liverpool a wealth of knowledge, attitude and influences, all which they are using to evolve the band into what it is today and further.

The band have just released their latest track Ultraviolet. We had a advance preview of the song to review it. The songs been a staple of their set list for a little while and I've had a chance to hear it live and have been impressed with it enough to congratulate the band on it.... here we go with the review........

Ultraviolet, is a detour from their sound that we have been introduced to previously by the band as evidenced from its heavy classic rock/blues style intro. They pay homage to Thin Lizzy throughout the song with two of them playing complimentary guitar riffs, which sound amazing. The songs vocals with a unique three-part harmony with added phased effects stands out as being one of many things unique and wonderful about the song. The bridge breaks down the song with a nice beat and catchy vocals and sets up the chorus well giving it a build up. The chorus is catchy, well sung with backing and will no doubt leave you singing it for a while after listening to it.

Nice sounding guitar solos gives the song a break throughout showcasing the bands dexterity on par with Thin Lizzy and many other well-established bands past and present. They rest heavily on these riffs through the song (maybe a bit too much..... hmm.... no they actually fit the rest of the song and balance it out quite well. Especially the one after the mid chorus. wow!). The track repeats its catchy chorus ensuring those lyrics are engraved onto your psyche.

They have perfected a song akin to a hearty Irish Stew of a musical offering:

  • A tablespoon of The Beatles harmonies and vocal prowess.

  • Quality cuts of meaty Thin Lizzy-esque guitar sound and the skill to accomplish it

  • a sprinkling of their own sound brought forward from the bands previous tracks

  • a fresh sound ensuring the track doesn't feel as old as their classic rock influences but instead brings it right into 2019.

Put it all together and you have song complete with catchy lyrics sung with great vocals, great sounding guitar and a tempo to get the most stubborn audience member rocking along with them. It's safe to say the band are trying something new, something which they enjoy playing more and are more comfortable and adept at. Maybe the song is the sign of the direction the band is edging towards. I'd like to hear more of the same as this song is more of my kind of music having been brought up on classic rock like they probably were.

A great single from the band, a noticeably different direction then their last song Here we Go, which was very indie-pop with jangly guitar, a decent beat and vocals akin to The 1975. They certainly shouldn't go forward with their music making songs in the style they have done, but should instead embrace their skills and ability to create edgy, catchy upbeat rocking songs. Well done boys.
