Single Review - Winter by Mondegreen

Winter is the latest release from lo-fi indie/pop three-piece Mondgreen. We've had the pleasure of reviewing music offerings from them previously and are eager to check this one out to catch up with them and see how they are progressing musically.

As with previous releases there's a sense of serenity from the off with this track, but it becomes evident this track isn't like the others. Leanne Griffiths has taken lead on this song and has given the track a gritty rock sound. She stamps on the track her own personality and zest with her deftly plucked and strummed electric and unique well-sung vocal style.

The track, for me at least is a call-back to the 90s/00s (yes, I'm feeling old now) where indie/alt-rock roots grew strong. Trying to place why I get a nostalgia feeling about this track is hard to place however. Maybe it's the style of vocals, lyrics or performance. I get a feeling given of one of those US songs that filter it's way over to the UK like a Deep Blue Something, Alanis Morrisette, Elastica or a Jimmy Eat World song. Either-way, what we have here is a stunning song by the trio showcasing their beautiful-sounding harmonies, which sets them apart from most bands.

Overall, Winter, while incorporating the bands mellow side favoured in previous tracks, has now added some "umph" into the mix which means their sound, at least for this track and maybe, hopefully, future tracks has evolved into something more. The rock-ier sound complete with harmonies and given here is great to listen to and I hope the band can focus on providing more of the same in the future.
