El Misti have become synonymous, throughout their numerous releases, in incorporating a grandiose feeling and style to their music whether it be in the inclusion of strings, trumpets and piano. It can't be said they do things by halves - instead opting to include additional instruments to evoke emotions, to add a light-hearted feel to dark politically poignant lyrics or maybe just to give a feeling of nostalgia and homegrown rustic folk music. Their latest track, our track of the week, Couldn't God Damn Someone Else is yet another example of this.
From the off the track introduces us to a 3/4 waltz style drum rhythm and accompanied by clean acoustic giving the impression of a light-hearted ballad, but the song is more of a ballad of woe where the title says it all. Lead singer Paddy cries this out during the chorus with a solitary sorrowful violin as backing. As he takes you through the rest of the song the feeling of sadness is further broadcast with truly talented vocal work full of range which traverses the low and highs as he goes through the song.
Well done to Paddy and the rest of El Misti on yet another great musical offering showcasing their musical diversity, ability to incite emotion and give us their social observations and views sugar-coated in great sounding music.
