EP Review - Bines - Lay it on Me

It's hard to miss BINES's latest EP Lay it on Me when searching through the latest releases online with its eye-catching pink, purple and white cover. The question is, are the tracks released as brash and colourful as the cover? We've took a moment to go through the EP track by track to review it and see for ourselves.

BINES, a four piece indie rock band from in and around the North West, have been busy in recent months recording and also gigging about the North West some of which we've played host for. It's clear to see from their live performance they've come on leaps and bounds. Let's see if their recorded music tells the same story.

First on the EP is Lay it on me a track which heavily reminds me of the indie rock sound of the late-90s and early 00s, but with their usual mark on their songs, which gives it a more modern sound. The highlights of the track are front-man Danny Bowles's unique and powerful vocals full of reverb and attitude, the guitar riffs which contrast well to the jangle of the rhythm guitar and the drums beating out a steady rhythm but not overpowering.

The EP then goes onto Shame, which keeps up the energised feel to the release. The combination of great-sounding guitar, drums (with extra cow-bell) and well spaced guitar riffs. The chorus for this one is definitely a sing-along special bound to have anyone chanting it back to the band at any gig. The breakdown towards the half-point gives the band a chance to get any audience foot-stomping and hand-clapping along with the song and is a much needed break in the six minute song before building it all back up again. This song so far is the highlight of the EP for my personally.

Next up Fade Away. That early 00's indie feel is again strong in this song. The band doesn't relent with the tempo here either and with a professionalism give us another catchy track full of great sounding performances on guitar, bass and drums with vocals that take us through to the end. The guitar riff game provided by Matt Broderick in this track is strong, going hand in hand with the rest of the band and not going too overboard.

Their untitled (or titled [track 4]) track brings us to the conclusion of the EP. A slower number then those before it. Haunting vocals from Dan showcase his diversity and reverb-laden guitar from Matt give the track that extra edge. More of an instrumental number, this track gives an insight as to how the band is more proficient together at creating a great sounding song which puts across the emotion without leaning heavily on spoken word. A great finisher for the EP.

Have a listen to Lay it on Me yourself and tell us what you think.
