Single P/review - The Life I Left Behind by Ben Burke

Liverpool based singer/songwriter, Ben Burke, is gearing up to release his next release, The Life I Left Behind and we've been given a preview, which we all but snatched out of his hands, eager to have a listen. We heard a live version of the track when he took part in one of our past live stream events earlier this year.

From the single cover, he looks proud of this one, and from the off it's easy to see why. The song starts with a confidently played fast acoustic which then is accompanied by a beat, which elevates the song further into a dance-y indie folk number.

Ben then gives us a strong vocal performance, singing his way through the verse, in style that can only be described as Scouse Country/Folk. The lyrics are reminiscent of one of those timeless folk classics everyone knows the words to whenever they hear it, but classic it is not, as Ben has given a professional modern sound to it all. Catchy as the lyrics are, the vocals that sing them are exceptional, giving gravitas and weight to the meaning making us the audience believe in and relate to every word he sings and the meaning behind them.

From the start you'd be with the majority in thinking that the songs a quick ditty with its up-tempo beat and with Ben's fast-sung vocals, but surprisingly enough, the song gives us unexpected breaks come about towards the end leading into a gospel ending where Ben showcases his soulful yet powerful vocals in front of backing vocals raising the song even more before giving us a great ending. Overall, the track is a great indie/folk number which will no doubt have any venue dancing to its great beat and well-sung vocals. We look forward to hearing more from Ben in the future.

Ben Burke releases The Life I Left Behind on 18th September across all streaming services.
