Single Review - Happy by 32 Tens

32 Tens are a band from Warrington that refuse to be pigeon-holed into any genre with a sound that encompasses indie, rock, rap, pop and more. The band was formed in 2017 and shortly after they played to a crowd of 3000 people supporting Billy Bragg thereafter they released their first single Insane Asylum. From then on they've been going from strength to strength performing, always at full throttle and giving their all, and show no signs of stopping.

Their latest release, Happy, comes off the back of their previous release, Swan Song, which was well-received on release and from the sounds of it, this one will fair the same too. Their artwork for their releases is always vibrant, eye-catching and unique and suits their music well. The artwork for Happy is as vibrant as ever with a gamer playing Mario in the clouds. I like to look at the inspiration for artwork being a designer myself. Most of the time its nonsensical stuff, but this one speaks out saying that the characters head is in the clouds playing games, while others are trying to cheer him up saying there's better things to do not knowing that's where he feels happiest right now.

Happy appears to be about others who are in your circle and beyond trying to say "be happy" an the angst and frustration about it all. The track comes in with a unique and interesting guitar riff that captures your interest immediately. Front-man Max's vocals then introduce us to the song followed by a fast guitar, which sets the feel for the rest of the song reminiscent of am up-tempo Flamenco ballad amped up to high-heaven with a gritty kind of sound. Max showcases his rap and word-smithery talent as the verse comes in. Just when you think the songs just going to keep gearing up to a faster speed, a catchy break comes in setting up the even-infectious chorus.

Max, from seeing plenty of his live shows with the 32 Tens, has a penchant for giving his all on stage with veins bulging in his neck and eyes rolling as he belts out his powerful quick vocals and lyrics. I've never seen anything like it before and to date. It's mesmerising. This song manages to capture this performance well and you can hear his growling as he reaches the last breath. Limits have no meaning to Max as he pushes on and sings until he can't no more. This is the case during the climax of the song.

Overall, it's 32 Tens on top of their game. The track is complete with catchy hooks, unique genre fusion, style and lyrics. Who'd have thought a mariachi style guitar would go well with a rap style of vocals and heavier rock sound? As with previous releases the band have given us here something worthy of recognition as it has the full package, a foot-stomping up tempo rocking song with catchy lyrics and unique sound.
