Single Review - Marquee by Liam Hillyer

Marquee is the latest single release from Liam Hillyer, an aspiring singer/songwriter representing Widnes, Cheshire (my hometown - so proud).

2020 has been a busy year for him so far having released a four track EP and three singles. However, with COVID-19 on the scene he's been unable to properly promote his releases, relying on social media to see him through with live performances. We had the pleasure of having him perform for us and were really impressed.

The track hits you with a retro feel from the off. The swing beat, strings and jangly electric throughout as well as his vocals with backing further add to the feel of a soft-rock ballad from the early 60s. Listening to Liam take us through the song, there is a definite retro lilt to his vocal style, which suits the style he has chosen for Marquee.

Overall, it's a great tranquil soft rock ballad, which suits his vocal style well throughout. This style seems to be what Liam is comfortable performing and it's great to hear something as unique as this on the scene. However, having heard his previous release This Town, a great sounding indie rock number which sounds similar to something The Lathums would make and the fact that he's created this solo is amazing. I yearn for a more up-beat indie rock number from him like this; It is where his strengths lie in vocal talent and ability to make a great sounding number. I'll be watching his progress as he evolves into even more of a creative song-smith and look forward to any future releases.
