Single Review - UU by The Personas

UU is the latest release from indie rock band The Personas. The four piece rock outfit hail from in and around Northwich/Warrington and, in the few months they have been active, have been hard at it gigging around the North West, a few of which Softlad have been privileged to host.

This track is their debut release and from listening to it first time round, they are entering the recorded music scene with guns blazing. The track is undeniably a song full of angst and frustration, which is brought to the listeners attention from the off with some recorded sounds we all can relate to. That is, the sound of frustration. In this instance, its that unlucky round in pinball where no matter how hard you try, you can never win. The sense of frustration is evident and sets the tone for the rest of the song. This intro certainly catches your attention and the change from the usual slow/quiet intro catches you off-guard for the rest of the song.

The song comes in after the intro with a nice up-tempo beat. Front-man Sam McLoughlin then showcases a powerful, modern-sounding vocal style accompanied by the band performing at top gear. The fresh sounding vocals contrast well with the gritty, raw guitar played throughout the first part. The band showcase their softer side inter-mixed with the raw indie sound well with numerous breaks in the song where Sam sings us through with another style to his vocal performance built up by backing vocals and lightly played clean-sounding guitar. All in all, it sounds amazing and never leaves you bored of the same tempo and sound.

The song overall, is fuelled by angst and frustration over being led on by someone you are into. The angst and raw feelings are masterfully put out there in UU and you feel it to the end. It's a great up-tempo track, one which will cement them as a band who means business on the scene and also will showcase their music well.
